Ultrarunning Takes Strides with Publicity
On Sunday, October 21, 2007, the Denver Post gave extreme sports a leg up in much deserved recognition. In particular, athletes over 40 are breaking records that most can’t imagine are even possible. These individuals are the role models of today and the years to come.
Ultrarunning, adventure sports, extreme sports, or whatever people choose to call it - is an athletic achievement of few. While marathon training and races are grueling and demanding on the body, some athletes take it a few steps further, often exceeding 100 miles in 100+ degree weather, uphill! The list of athletes at the starting line is small, often just a few hundred, and the list of finishers is even smaller. Heat, rough terrain, dehydration, sore muscles, blisters - you name it and these athletes have either experienced the trauma, or have learned to rise above it through expert foot and total body care. Prevention is key; every step of the way. The reward is in the experience. Finishing in a prime position ain’t bad either!
Marshall Ulrich, 56 year old ultrarunner, hiker and training coach from Colorado was mentioned in the Denver Post as one of many athletes over 40 who beat world records again and again. Age has no effect on their mental and physical endurance levels. Marsh has a mile long list of athletic accomplishments; but his greatest asset is being humble and helping others. Marsh is an inspiration to everyone who strives to get off the couch and go running; maybe not 135 miles, but still moving.
